Utah's Big Pro-Prop 8 Donors

[Prop 8 Fallout] Several e-mails and photocopies are floating through Salt Lake City calling out companies, trusts and business owners who contributed heavily to the anti-same-sex marriage California measure, and urging people not to patronize their businesses. After doing some research, I found the following contributors to the Prop 8 campaign. The information is public and you can find all donors, pro and con, here. The biggest Utah spenders in support of Prop 8, according to California campaign finance records include:

Katharine Garff, Bountiful, member of the State Board of Regents and wife of Robert Garff, CEO of Garff Motors: $100,000.

Henry Marsh
, Bountiful, 4-time Olympic athlete, world-record holder in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, attorney, motivational speaker and co-founder of multi-level marketing company MonaVie, a berry juice purported to have nutritional and anti-oxidant properties: $49,000.

Kenneth Newby, St. George, owner of Newby Buick: $10,000.

Stephen Wade, St. George, owner of Stephen Wade Automotive Group: $10,000.

David Moon, Provo, general partner of Esnet, LTD, an information technology investment firm: $200,000.

Brent Bishop, Farmington, board chairman of ContentWatch, an Internet filtering software company: $30,000.

Francis Magleby, Provo, BYU art professor emeritus and painter of LDS temple murals throughout the world: $25,000.

Brent Andrus, Park City, operator of Huntington Hotels: $25,000.

Jay Clark, Centerville, co-owner of A & Z Produce wholesalers: $25,000.

Scott and Randy Wilkinson, St. George, co-owners of Wilkinson Electric: $30,000 ($10,000 each from Scott and Randy; $10,000 from Wilkinson Electric.)

Meanwhile Equality Utah, the advocacy group for the state's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, issued a press release today calling for calm in the growing number of protests against the LDS Church's involvement in passing Proposition 8.

"We must engage in civil and peaceful expressions and conduct. There is no room for violence, vandalism or intimidation -- Equality Utah objects to these acts.

... Equality Utah remains confident that the LDS Church will be true to its past public statements that it is not anti-gay. We believe the Church will show its genuine compassion for the needs of Utah’s gay and transgender people and their families who rightly ask for basic legal protections," the statement reads.

EU executive director Mike Thompson adds: "During such an emotional time, where wounds run deep, we must remind ourselves of the greater good. We must make efforts to forgive where forgiveness is needed and fix what needs to be fixed. We must find ways to work together – families in our community are depending on us. As the LDS Church stated, we can build a better society. Equality Utah is committed to doing just that.”

Another round of anti-Proposition 8 protests are scheduled around the country for this weekend, including here in Salt Lake City. In southern California, gay rights advocates have targeted several businesses for boycott, including a restaurant and car dealership.

  1. I must say, I'm a little shocked to not see Larry "don't make me cry" Miller on there. It would've sucked boycotting the Jazz.

Anyhow, I'm going to strongly suggest to my friends and family in Utah to not buy any cars from the Garff enterprises.

  2. With each fresh act of vandalism, intimidation and now acts of terror (white powder in envelopes) I lose interest in fighting against Prop 8. These instances are too widespread to place on the shoulders of but a few. If this is how you guys intend to behave, you're on your own.

  7. To the homosexuals - how narcissistic, self-absorbed, vain, egotisical, and narrow minded. Get over it! The discussion and debate is not whether you were born having physical attraction to the same-sex, but whether you CHOOSE to act on those feelings. So please, quit playing the victim and the martyr, you don't want equal rights, you want SPECIAL rights so you can assuage your feelings and justify your behavior.

  8. Holy Shit!!! How cruel, controlling, and down right ignorant to define others destiny's based on the own cultish religious beliefs. It seems to be part of the fricked up need of power that some people have become obsessed with.

Other religions have agreed with proposition 8,yet kept it within the congregation's as a religious covenant. CHOICE.............

The Mormons have been persecuted too Example: when they destroyed a newpaper and the lifes of it's employees..... I guess when your raised to believe you will be a God someday, you think you can play God. Thats NARCISSISTIC, needless to say narrow minded.
The gay community is just want's rights the average citizen has.

I have asked myself if I was lesbian, I am not. My drives were from some pretty messy legitimate victimization, impulses were stemming from the anger. A natural by-product if your are to heal.(beats Prozak) I have remained alone until I sorted it out.... And I'll be dammed if it wasn't my own perception of "this can't be I cause I would never do that, It happens, and I got peeved.

Our Homosexual and Gay Friends deserve to be married, and in loving caring relationships. Our children deserve acceptance of their sexuality, and parents that can communicate with them, and not condemn such personal delicate matters. Just think, if that prevented one homosexual missionary from taking his life, a sexual assault, hate crime, or closet case alcoholic, the world would be a better place. People are born Gay, and can turn Gay. I feel they should have the same civil freedoms as anyone. They don't need to justify their sexual preference to anyone it's PERSONAL and shouldn't be accountable to religious fanatic's who feel their way is the only way.

Boycotts are fine. I bought my "Yota" from Mark Miller they were honest, not pushy, and fair. Yet discrepancy in a boycott is good.
Salta's has a right to be insulted, and Kudo's to Holly for her list of who not to support in this town. CHANGE!

Maybe a Charity Drive for funds to contest proposition eight. Heres an Idea:

  11. Why ban Mormon marriages? How about taking a little advise from Martin Luther King here, Were going to do this, and do it peacefully. Anger is valid gang, yet it can do you in......
and under mind your goals..... don't play it .....! Take direction with it.... Speak out! How many mothers would give anything to bring their young son's back from an early grave due to a guilt suicide due to repressed homosexuality? How many women struggle to love again leaving these dominant abusive entanglement's? How many children suppress deep psychological issues in fear of letting the family down in quest for the celestial kingdom? When they could have been intercepted at an early age, thus giving quality of life to the child? Instead of instilling denial, and teaching a "little white lie habit". And the pseudo forgiveness factor..... ( The straw that broke my ex-LDS back... I would have been 6 feet under without it. Impossible to work out as a Mormon. Understandable as a Christian. WE DO THIS FOR EVERBODY!

  12. This list is hardly the work of a competent journalist. One can easily find other examples, including the Ashtons of Orem, who contributed an even million. The list could go on and on. One more example of this paper's editor's incompetence.

  13. Expand the noggin just a smidge, could there possibly be a logical reason why Alan Ashton was not mentioned? I see two... So while on the Hierarchy 7th Ward Hayride to St George, to by Mini Vans and lug home the masses of produce from a wholesaler to rot in the garage, discuss the rational in the statement's that have appeared on this blog. That will more than pass the time on the the 300+ mile journey. Boy, it's a good thing new cars come with a tank of gas. It sure helps sell them in this depressed economy. I'm sure the banks are ready to loan also..... Rational statement's? or plain typical for Utah.

Rebecca Walch seems to get personal attacks on her journalistic abilities every time see writes on a topic you angels can't seem to tolerate. Our gay community are tax payers, productive citizens and deserve the same civil liberties as anybody.

I am pleased they brought Mr Ashton in the limelight, What about his Ex-partner? Do you feel that his wife would have benefited, by proposition 8? I don't, based on the thought he may have married a male the first time, and her desire of a life long marriage could have been possible. I guess more of these same situations will continue in todays world, yet their is always tomorrow.

  14. Thanks for the list. I guess some of the moronic readers' don't understand that it's not a complete list and there's a link for more (Kelly R.)

We had test driven and were ready to purchase a Volvo at Ken Garff. I guess I'll be spending my money out of state, cause I'd rather pay to go out of town and buy the car than give money to a bigot.

I personally won't be spending any more of my money supporting hate. This is after purchasing a SAAB and a Jaguar at Garff.

This is no different than supporting racial discrimination, but I'm sure all these people wouldn't be so quick to donate to "I hate Jews" or "I hate Blacks."

    ReplyDelete
  15. Since the Mormon Community has been the majority of contributors to "proposition hate". One might wonder why 77% percent of the donation's came from one religious group.

There is also a trend in this group, they supported Dubya's campaign, Mittens and pulled out on McCain. Makes one question if the true motive for divine intervention into civil matters is to ensure the perception of traditional marriage, or to attempt to bridge the gap between Mormonism and the Bible Belt Folks? Why? 2012 Election.......

Hell of a thought, to use our Gay Community as the sacrifical lambs for political gain. Possible? Yes, and well worth tracking. These are people, not tools.

  17. Wha whoo-i think i know where I will buy my next car-

The gay and lesbian groups are doing to the LDS what they think is being done to them. RACISM The difference is they are mad that while they as a group have pulled together we have to. And the efforts of the LDS are stronger.
