It's No on Judge Hilder

[Checks and Balances...Not] The state Senate just voted against confirming 3rd District Judge Robert Hilder for the Utah Court of Appeals. It went as most legal types expected. A man with a long record as a fair and professional district court judge went down in flames.

The vote was 16-12, including the anticipated rant from Sen. Chris Buttars, (R-West Jordan) questioning Hilder's temperament. Questions had also surfaced during earlier hearings about the judge's moral character because he has been married, divorced and married again.

Another stinking sign of your Legislature at work. (Holly Mullen)

  1. This is an outrage. That such a decent and honorable man could be held to the ticky tacky gun tottin' moral police is a crime against good reason and judgment. If they don't like Hilder, just who would they like? Human beings should never submit themselves to public service if the gateway is our stinky senate.

  2. This is just such a joke. There is no one more qualified to be in this position, and I am so furious at our joke of a Senate. I got cheated out of an amazing public servant today, and I don't even know what to do about it? Write the nay-sayers a letter? Can they even read? Evidence points to no. I'm always so amused that the Republican champions of small government are so eager to dig down into personal lives and legislate morality. The man has thousands of cases on his record, and we're discussing his marriages? Come on. Such a sad, shameful day for Utah.

  3. Yeah, it really sucks when a qualified judicial nominee gets rejected. You have Hilder, I have Bork...

  4. Great News. He was against the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and supported the gun ban at the U. Its a great day for Utah gun owners.

  5. Judge Hilder has made some very poor decisions pertaining to things other than the "gun ban". He has caused personal grief to a number of families by his arrogant "I'm the decider" mentality without the basis of the law brought into these types of decisions. Although, I am sure his defeat was almost entirely related to the gun issue, I'm glad for his defeat for entirely different reasons.

  6. If Buttars doesn't like him, chances are he was at least a decent candidate. How sad.

  7. After what happened yesterday, I am embarrassed to be a Utahn. Those 16 intelligent (one having the demeanor of an entertainer) embarrassed themselves royally yesterday on the Senate Floor.

  8. This is good! We here in Utah cling to our Religion and Guns! Don't tread on us!

  9. First Leslie Lewis (who probably deserved the axe; she was a bit of a nutjob) and now Judge Hilder. Don't even think about messing with the rednecks or their guns in Utah; they call the shots.

  10. Judge hilder is a fraud and a liar, who lied to the voters in the voter information pamphlet about Judge Lindberg's qualifications to be on the ballot. See firejudgelindberg.com for proof, exhibit A is an email from him showing 3 unacceptably delayed cases in 1 3 month period, when only 6 are allowed over 6 years.

  11. My daughter is still recovering from Judge Hilder's cavalier attitude. ("10 year old girls bounce back" I believe was what he said). Though he set it right years later we are still trying to catch up for the time we lost.
