Here Comes the Bride

How do you know when a fictional pop-culture phenomenon truly has reached "phenomenon" status? When people are trying to bring that fiction into the real world.

In anticipation of the August release of Breaking Dawn -- the latest installment in Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular teen-vampire love saga -- on Aug. 2, The King's English Bookshop is sponsoring a unique contest. "Ever wonder exactly what Bella's wedding dress looks like?" goes the pitch, but they're really wondering if all you aspiring designers out there can sketch, sculpt or otherwise re-create the dress just as it's described in the last novel, Eclipse. The deadline has been extended to July 21, and we know all you devotees of the books need something to do with yourselves as you count down the 16 days until you can read Breaking Dawn. 1. Gah. I'm about 2/3rds of the way through Eclipse, because right now I need escapist junk fiction to keep me occupied during an extremely stressful time in my life.

I thought the author might milk it for another book or two before getting into the wedding. I'd lay bets that the actual turning doesn't happen until the sequel to this one.
