Brown Bag It

For lunch today, I stopped by Washington Square (451 S. State) to watch Calico perform as part of the Salt Lake City Arts Council's annual Brown Bag Concert Series. The free shows take place Monday-Friday, 12:15-1 p.m.

Washington Square is not the kind of place I expect to be equipped with a stellar sound system, but the council went above and beyond and Calico sounded better than ever. If you haven't checked out their sophomore release, Black Pyramid, get thee to your local record store or CDBaby ASAP.

The quintet really came into its own this year and their chemistry is quite intense, to say the least. Each member is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist with a welcome aversion to bombastic theatrics and extensive noodling. Today, with the wind blowing and a large fountain cascading behind them, Calico cast one hell of a mid-day spell.

Check out their website for future shows and do it quickly--Gunnell is off to the Rhode Island School of Design this fall. We're not sure what will become of this great local band.

Get out of the office and into the sun at one of Brown Bag's remaining summer shows.

  1. Thanks for calling attention to the Brown Bag series. It's a great diversion for a lunch break.

I've been playing with a local band called Kairo by Night (Middle-Eastern music) since 2004, and they've been doing the Brown Bag every year. This year we're scheduled to play on July 30.
