Trib Still Hedging Its Global Warming Bets

[So-called Objectivity] Dear Salt Lake Tribune:

Will there come a day when you publish a global warming story that doesn't mince words about the facts of global warming? Will we ever see a piece about climate change that doesn't pose the matter as still up for debate?

Are readers, seriously, supposed to look at hayseed nut-job Rep. Mike Noel (R-Kanab) as any kind of authority on the issue?

Aren't there some topics that really, truly don't have two sides?

Coming next week in the Trib: Is a round Earth fad, fiction or fact?

  1. I know cutting off debate is a wonderful way to win an argument, but seeing as the American Physical Society has problaimed the debate over human induced global warming "open" only shortly after calling the evidence "incontrovertible" at least shows room for debate.

    From the article:

:The APS is opening its debate with the publication of a paper by Lord Monckton of Brenchley, which concludes that climate sensitivity -- the rate of temperature change a given amount of greenhouse gas will cause -- has been grossly overstated by IPCC modeling. A low sensitivity implies additional atmospheric CO2 will have little effect on global climate."

So, yeah, there are two sides to this. I'm not saying Rep. Mike Noel makes an eloquent case, but as with many things, being a pompous ass doesn't necessarily make you wrong.

  2. It's so true, jeffjames!

And nobody can "prove" Darwinian natural selection or, for that matter, gravity and--oh-ho!--that so-called "heliocentric model."

They're all just theories, after all.

  4. Actually, Holly, it *is* still a debate -- which is something people would see if they didn't get their news from biased sources like opinion blogs.

There are a lot of smart people that aren't outright skeptics, but also don't firmly believe that we know enough to silence dissenting voices yet.

One good site for this is a coalition of scientists and meteorologists that are pretty sure climate change is happening, but aren't ready to say it's mankind's fault. Their site is http://www.icecap.us.

I'm not taking a side here, but you should know that there's still a debate going on.
