Strange Bedfellows

[News] This week's City Weekly includes a news story updating the activities of several of 2007's cover feature profiles. Among the updates was cyber-squatter Robert Paisola. While doing research on Paisola's latest shenanigins, it transpired that he and another recent cover subject, Black Chandelier founder and designer Jared Gold, have something in common. Namely the apparently defunct fashion magazine Rene.

This free Salt Lake City-based glossy bi-monthly debuted in January, supposedly had a second issue, then vanished from sight. If you visit Rene's abandoned MySpace site you find Gold listed as a contributing writer. Paisola is featured under the executive team, listed as director of international operations. He's wearing an extraordinarily colorful shirt and a wide grin.

Quite how you interpret that grin is an intriguing question. Paisola loves the camera, no matter who's behind the lens. He's got a new sex offenders registry photo up on the state Website and it displays exactly, but exactly the same white-toothed grin. (Stephen Dark)

  1. It is unfortunate that Stephen Dark was having such a hard time coming up with something to write, that he called upon society's "six degrees of separation" to write this blog.

The fact that Jared Gold, a primo local fashion designer, should be invited to write an article for the premier edition of Salt Lake's only free fashion magazine, which lasted only one or two issues, and Robert Paisola was listed in the nebulous position of "director of
international operations" (give me a break!) means they have some kind of connection worth mentioning, is absurd.

Stephen Dark and/or "City Weekly" have a much closer connection by virtue of producing covers stories on both individuals!! Following that logic, THEY are the "Strange Bedfellows"!

That Stephen Dark knows how to use Google, and chooses to dig up and blog about the sex offenders' registry, has little or no value to the public. (Perhaps if the "City Weekly" finds this so important, they should have merely shown concern for public safety by apologizing for featuring a sex offender without a warning notice.)

I admittedly find the "City Weekly" a guilty pleasure once in a while, but this and other recent journalism by Stephen Dark belongs in the back pages with the advertising and Want Ads that even the "National Enquirer" probably wouldn't print.

  2. Wow.

I've had articles published in countless publications whose editors-- "Director of International Operations" notwithstanding-- I've never met in person. In fact, I'd speculate that more than half of them I couldn't even name at this juncture in time, as the (ahem) "Director" types rarely gave me the assignments. On the contrary, gigs were handed out by style editors, contributing editors, et al.

Which begs the question: I've had work published in Hustler magazine. Does this make me a low-brow heterosexual by association? I mean, surely Larry Flynt and I must have had some stalwart personal relationship if I've had a by-line nestled among the pages of his periodical. Right?

The "if a and b, then c" syllogism is applied in the case of an individual as warm-hearted, genuinely talented and laudable of motives as Jared Gold when coupled with anyone of dubious intent, it's not simply inaccurate. On the contrary, it's downright laughable.

However, the fact that Stephen Dark researched Gold extensively and seemed to take great interest in Mr. Gold's sexual orientation makes the subtle-as-a-sledgehammer-at-six-a.m. assertion that these two men are "bedfellows" downright egregious.

One can't help but wonder: exactly what culpable correlation is Mr. Dark attempting to establish through this poorly-researched discourse of his? Is the implication that-- gasp!--the alleged 'moral majority' has been right all along in its ignorant assumption that homosexuals and child molesters are one and the same?

Are we to believe the double entendre ensconced in this thinly-veiled exemplification of NAMBLA-ganda?

Never mind that pedophiles (along with all the other convicted "sex offenders" combined) are predominately--as in, statistically around 9 times out of 10--heterosexual.

Surely style fags must have seduced government officials and bound them in chiffon to propagate such a misnomer.

Or...perhaps it is I who was wrong in my belief that the City Weekly is a reputable newspaper rather than a tabloid on par with the sub-par and sensationalist titles such as Us Weekly, The National Enquirer, and OK!

In short, Dark's latest ground-breaking "news" on Jared Gold is anything but "O.K." The information presented was never fact-checked by Gold...or even one of the Black Chandelier staff members, for that matter.

Hrmm. Did somebody murmur "Less Than One"?

I can't be sure of such gaps in logic, when my inner voice keeps bellowing: Isn't anyone familiar with the term "yellow journalism"?

There's a reason it exists--same as diapers and slander charges.

While Stephen Dark has penned some excruciatingly-researched and finely-crafted stories in his day, this nadir in the body of work established heretofore is testament to the fact that sometimes a correspondent holds the pursuit of truth in inestimable grace, while other times--much to my chagrin--integrity is trumped by the basest of human functions, streaming out a piss-poor excuse of syllables barely worth the exertion it takes to depress a urinal's handle and send it on its rightful way.

Make no mistake: it's not so much that I've wiped your credibility away, Mister Dark...but rather the unpleasant truth that next time I encounter your painstakingly apropos surname in print, I'll proceed with caution: preferably, armed with copious amounts of two-ply.
